Dr. Bandy X. Lee on violence prevention, collective self-awareness, and Humanity’s big choice.

Is Humanity moving toward self-destruction, or are we still capable of changing course?

In this episode of Connecting with Coincidence, Bernard Beitman, MD speaks with Dr. Bandy X. Lee, a forensic and social psychiatrist specializing in violence prevention, about the crisis of collective self-awareness now facing Humanity.

Dr. Lee argues that our greatest threat is not technology, politics, or economics alone. Beneath those visible crises is a deeper psychological and social pattern: Humanity has not yet learned to recognize its own destructive behavior clearly enough to stop it.

The conversation explores structural violence—the systematic deprivation of basic human needs—as a hidden engine behind war, inequality, discrimination, climate disruption, and social collapse. Drawing on decades of work in violence prevention, Dr. Lee explains why societies must learn to identify dangerous patterns early and set firm boundaries before destructive leaders, institutions, and systems spread further harm.

Bernard and Dr. Lee also discuss the possibility of “psychotherapy for Humanity,” the emergence of a Collective Self-Observer, and the need to replace despair with agency. If Humanity can observe itself more clearly, perhaps it can begin to choose differently.

At the center of the conversation is the idea behind Dr. Lee’s forthcoming book, One World or None: Humanity can continue on a suicidal trajectory, or awaken to our shared fate and build a more life-affirming future.
